With reference to Mr. Chamberlain's Des-
23611 patch No. 173 of the 17th. June, 1902, I have the honour to

inform you that Mr. Tett, the Officer who was engaged by the
Crown Agents for service in this Colony as Clerk of Works has
resigned his post, and that the Crown Agents have been request-
ed to engage a successor as soon as possible. I enclose a copy

of the telegram and letter addressed to them on the subject,
from which you will observe that Mr. Tett has been called upon
to refund the cost of his passage to the Colony in accordance
with the terms of his Agreement.

The Director of Public Works has now re-
ported that Mr. Tett, without giving notice of his intention
to do so, left the Colony by the German Mail Stemmer "Seydlitz"
which sailed on the 14th. instant. He has not refunded the
cost of his passage to the Colony, but a sum of $80.42, being
the amount of his salary from the 1st. to the 14th. instant,
remains in the hands of the Goverment.
3.
As it appears useless to attempt to take
any steps to obtain a refund of the balance due by him to the
Government, I have the honour to recommend that no further
action
